Detailed JID Analysis of Indiana HIV Outbreak Wins CDC Science Award

In a 2017 article in JID, authors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and elsewhere demonstrated how integrating laboratory, phylogenetic, and epidemiologic data could provide a detailed reconstruction of the 2014-2016 HIV outbreak in Indiana. Their work has now been awarded a 2018 Charles C. Shepard Science Award by CDC for scientific excellence in data methods and study design among original research published by CDC scientists. The award recognizes the development and demonstration of an outstanding or exceptional approach to solving a public health problem.

The article, “Detailed Transmission Network Analysis of a Large Opiate-Driven Outbreak of HIV Infection in the United States,” appeared in the Nov. 1, 2017, issue of JID.
