IDSA Leadership Institute

IDSA Launches Leadership Institute for Mid-Career Members

IDSA is excited to announce the launch of the 2019 Leadership Institute. Designed for mid-career, infectious diseases specialists, this leadership and management training program begins with a two-and-a-half-day intensive investigation into the skills and practices of effective leaders in medical and nonmedical contexts.

Participants in the Institute, to be held in Pentagon City, Va. from May 6 to May 8, 2019, will join a distinguished community of ascending leaders, develop a personalized career plan, and work with their peers to draft a solution to a pressing leadership challenge within their place of employment. Drawing from the principles and best practices of adult education, the IDSA Leadership Institute will help to prepare the next generation of ID leaders for the opportunities to which they are likely to rise.

Participants will be expected to build on this shared experience by contributing to a remote learning community for one year following the Leadership Institute. Through this community, participants will engage in peer and near-peer mentoring, share challenges and successes concerning their career plans and leadership projects, and expand their professional networks.

Up to 30 participants will be selected through a competitive application process launching Monday, Oct. 22. All Institute participants must meet the following criteria at the time of application:

  • Active IDSA membership
  • Engaged in clinical practice of infectious diseases, clinical or basic research, administration, teaching in infectious diseases, public health, or a related field as primary professional activity
  • History of substantive service to the profession locally, regionally, or nationally
  • Minimum of five years relevant professional experience
  • Evidence of deep intellectual curiosity and growth mindset

It is important that our learning community represents the full diversity of the IDSA membership. As such, we strongly encourage women and individuals under-represented in medicine to apply.
