Cynthia Sears, MD, FIDSA, Named IDSA President

Four Members Join Board of Directors to Continue to Elevate Field of Infectious Diseases

IDSA is pleased to announce Cynthia Sears, MD, FIDSA, as the Society’s new president. Dr. Sears will be joined by dedicated, experienced board members as well as newly elected representatives who will advance IDSA’s commitment to improving the health of all people, communities, and society.

“Whether it is HIV, HCV, or the microbiome, no field of medicine has been more transformative or exciting as infectious diseases,” said Dr. Sears. “The greatest advances in health have come from the field of ID, and we must continue to be prepared to address the unforeseen clinical, scientific, and public health challenges that lie ahead. In order to ensure the future of the specialty, it is crucial that we foster the next generation of infectious diseases specialists.”

Dr. Sears will lead the Society’s work to promote its strategic priorities including:

  • Attracting the best and brightest to the field of infectious diseases
  • Promoting leadership that leads to improvements in antibiotic resistance and stewardship
  • Producing useful, timely and relevant guidelines for care of patients with infections
  • Stimulating ID and HIV research and its clinical translation
  • Advocating funding for prevention and public health programs in ID and HIV
  • Recognizing the value of the infectious diseases (ID) physician

As Professor of Medicine and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health and Attending Physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Dr. Sears continues to engage in a broad range of activities that continue to renew her love for the field of infectious diseases.
