Purpose
To provide strategic direction to the Board of Directors on U.S. led responses to global infectious disease threats, including HIV, tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance, emerging and resurgent infectious diseases, globally neglected epidemics, and global health security.
Responsibilities
- Make recommendations to the Board of Directors to develop and advance IDSA global health policy objectives.
- Engage with relevant federal agencies, Congress and other stakeholders to inform global ID policy and advance IDSA objectives.
- Develop new policy proposals as needed (e.g. funding, legislative or regulatory proposals) to advance global ID objectives.
- Develop white papers and other documents as appropriate to articulate global ID issues; raise awareness among IDSA members, policymakers, media and other stakeholders; and advocate for IDSA priorities.
- Collaborate with appropriate IDSA committees to foster career opportunities in global infectious diseases.
- Encourage communication and collaboration with international infectious diseases societies.
- Coordinate with relevant IDSA policy committees and the HIVMA on matters that affect both domestic and global infectious disease policies and funding.
- A commitment to ensuring that principles of inclusion, diversity, access and equity are applied throughout IDSA governance.
Ideal Qualifications
Members should have expertise in at least one global health area under Committee’s charge, including HIV, TB, AMR, emerging and resurgent infectious diseases, or global health security issues.

Composition
Members shall include a Chair, Vice Chair, and twelve members to include at least one member who lives and works outside of the United States, representing expertise across a range of global infectious disease threats, including outbreak experience. Membership will include three ex-officio, voting representatives from the NIH, CDC and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, an HIVMA representative, and a liaison member from PIDS.
Meeting Frequency
One in person meeting at
IDWeek, with possibility of additional in-person meeting held in conjunction with a global health conference attended by committee members. Teleconferences to be held as needed, roughly twice per year. Committee members will be asked to respond to email communications on a regular or as needed basis to provide input on emerging global health policy issues and to help draft or provide feedback on draft IDSA policy documents. Committee members may also be asked to represent IDSA at meetings with policymakers or other global health stakeholders.
Estimated Time Commitment
1-2 hours per month; additional time may be required if member agrees to lead a project (e.g. drafting a white paper) or to represent IDSA at an external meeting.
Method of Appointment
The members shall be appointed by the Board of Directors with input from the President-elect in consultation with the CEO, committee chair, and staff liaison. Appointments will consider the need for a balance of individual areas of global health expertise.
Term of Office
The Chair and Vice Chair shall serve for two years. Reappointment for one additional, consecutive, one-year term is permissible. Members shall serve three-year terms with no option for consecutive reappointment..
