The LEAP Fellowship is a one-year program created by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society aimed at training future infectious diseases physician leaders who can bridge the gap between clinical and academic infectious diseases and our public health partners.
Purpose
- To guide and assist in the development of the Leaders in Epidemiology, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Public Health (LEAP) Fellowship.
Responsibilities
- Review and approve of LEAP application process and associated documents.
- Assist in the selection of LEAP Fellow Candidates (review and scoring of applications, selected interviews).
- Provide guidance and recommendations on the LEAP Fellowship curriculum and activities.
- Potentially serve as a mentor to LEAP Fellows (volunteers only, not all Steering Committee Members can serve as Fellow mentors).
- Participate in evaluation of the LEAP Fellowship progress.
- Help in development of future LEAP Fellowship cycles, if successfully funded.
Ideal Qualifications
Committee Members should have expertise or experience in one or more of the following:
- Partnering with federal or local public health agencies on projects/activities
- Healthcare Leadership
- Medical Education
- Healthcare Epidemiology
- Antimicrobial Stewardship.
Ideal candidates should also have:
- Expansive network of contacts within public health or infectious diseases
- Willingness or experience mentoring ID trainees

Composition
Members shall include a standing Chair, Dr. Kevin Hsueh, who is also the LEAP Fellowship Program Director and Dr. Judith Guzman-Cottrill, who is also the LEAP Curriculum Director. The IDSA, SHEA and PIDS will each have the opportunity to nominate two members to the Steering Committee. The CDC will have the opportunity to nominate 3-5 representatives.
Meeting Frequency
- The Steering Committee meets monthly for 1-hour long teleconferences.
- During the program additional ad-hoc meetings may be needed, especially during the applicant selection cycle.
- Committee Members will be invited to attend informal meet-ups with current and previous LEAP Fellows at national meetings (such as IDWeek and SHEA Spring).
Estimated Time/Effort Commitment
- Time commitment will vary depending on curriculum development status, with a target average of 2 hours per month.
- During the LEAP applicant selection cycle, this may be as high as 4 hours per month due to application review time.
- Committee members will be asked to respond to email communications on a regular or as needed basis.
Method of Appointment
The members shall be invited by the IDSA Leadership.
Term of Office
The Chair and Committee Members will serve for two years. Members may serve consecutive terms.
Accountability
Reports to IDSA, SHEA and PIDS board of directors.
