Med Ed COP Workgroup & Leadership Positions
Purpose
The IDSA Medical Education Community of Practice (Med Ed COP) offers an opportunity to engage with other members of IDSA who are invested in medical education and careers with educational activity as a cornerstone of their efforts. The goal of the Med Ed COP is to support our members to enhance their ability to teach all types of learners, to foster and advocate for career development on a clinician educator pathway including facilitating medical education scholarship, to educate other IDSA members about the importance of medical education and ultimately, to recruit the best and brightest into our field.
Structure
We are calling for applications for many different positions within the Med Ed COP, including leadership positions. The Med Ed COP is led by a Chair and Vice Chair who oversee all activities including the three primary Workgroups (IDWeek, Mentoring and Teaching and Learning Resources) each of which are led by a Workgroup Chair and Vice Chair. With the Med Ed COP Chair and Vice Chair, the Workgroup Chairs sit on the Executive Committee which also includes two at large members, a Fellows Subcommittee member and the Chair and Vice Chair of the Selection Committee. Vice Chairs have the opportunity to become Chairs at the end o the Chair’s term.
Responsibilities
Med Ed COP Workgroups: Each Workgroup has a Chair, Vice Chair and 18 members
IDWeek Workgroup: POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Leads the development and submission of Med Ed related sessions at IDWeek in partnership with Program Committee members responsible for Med Ed content. Assists in moderation of IDWeek Med Ed sessions. Organizes the Med Ed COP Meeting at IDWeek each year.
Mentorship Workgroup: POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Committee organizes and runs the IDSA Clinician Educator Mentoring Program and the Teaching Observation Program at IDWeek
Teaching and Learning Resources Workgroup: POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Develop and curate material to support the IDSA community to be better teachers as well as resources for ID Clinician Educators to enhance their skills in Medical Education.
Leadership Positions
Med Ed COP Chair: FILLED
Leads the Med Ed COP Executive Committee, coordinate sub-committees, collaborate with other IDSA committees, communicate with membership, and oversee all activities of the Med Ed COP. Participates in standing monthly meetings.
Med Ed COP Vice-Chair: OPEN FOR APPLICATION
In collaboration with the Chair, leads the Med Ed COP Executive Committee, coordinate sub-committees, collaborate with other IDSA committees, communicate with membership, and oversee all activities of the Med Ed COP. Participates in standing monthly meetings. The Med Ed COP Vice-Chair will become Med Ed COP Chair after 2 years assuming they demonstrate commitment to the work of the group.
Workgroup Chair (3): FILLED
Leads the Workgroup, communicates with workgroup members, and oversee all projects of the Workgroup. Serves on the executive committee and participates in standing monthly executive committee, and Workgroup meetings.
Workgroup Vice-Chair (3): OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS
Leads the Workgroup with the Chair, assists in overseeing projects of the Workgroup. Participates in Workgroup meetings. All Workgroup Vice-Chairs will become Workgroup Chairs after 2 years assuming they demonstrate commitment to the work of the group.
Selection Committee Chair: FILLED
Leads the Selection Committee which is composed of 5 persons who cannot apply for another position within the Med Ed COP. The Chair coordinates the application and selection process and sits on the Executive Committee. The Selection Committee Chair is responsible for ensuring that the selection process is conducted with principles of diversity, equity and inclusion which represent a core value for the Med Ed COP.
Selection Committee Vice Chair: OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS
Assists the Selection Committee Chair in overseeing the selection process. The Vice Chair also serves as one of the two at-large members of the Executive Committee. The Vice Chair will become the Chair of the Selection Committee after 2 years assuming they demonstrate commitment to the work of the COP.
At-Large Member to the Executive Committee (2): ONE AVAILABLE POSITION; WILL ALSO SERVE AS A SELECTION COMMITTEE VICE CHAIR
Serves a voting member of the Executive Committee, the governing body of the Med Ed COP. Participates in monthly conference calls. * One of these two at-large members is also the Vice Chair of the Selection Committee.
Number of Members
20 members per workgroup.
11 leadership positions.
Meeting Frequency
Workgroups: One in-person meeting during IDWeek, in addition to teleconferences throughout the year. Workgroup members will be asked to respond to email communications on a regular or as needed basis.
Executive Committee: Meets monthly through regularly scheduled conference calls.
Estimated Time Commitment
10-20 hours per year; additional time may be required for leadership positions.
Term of Office
All positions have a two-year term in office. At the end of the term, individuals can re-apply for any open position.
Accountability
The Workgroups will report to the Executive Committee, and the Executive Committee will report to the Education Committee.
Experience Required
The application process is competitive. All applicants must have a commitment to medical education in infectious disease. Applicants to the Vice Chair of the Med Ed COP must have leadership experience. Applicants to other leadership positions do not require prior formal leadership experience but must have a strong interest in medical education and engage in some aspect of teaching (classroom or bedside) in their career. Applicants to Workgroup positions do not require prior experience. The Med Ed COP has positions available for persons of all levels and junior faculty/junior members are encouraged to apply.
