Purpose
Ensure that IDSA’s journals portfolio supports and contributes to the Society’s strategic priorities, help IDSA stay abreast of publishing trends and the scholarly publishing environment, and ensure IDSA's journals remain the leading journals in ID.
Responsibilities
- Ensure strategic priorities of journals contribute to the overall goals of the Society.
- Remain abreast of the current scholarly publishing environment and make recommendations to the Board as necessary to ensure IDSA’s journals remain among the premier journals in infectious diseases.
- Identify strategic opportunities and risks facing the IDSA journals and make recommendations to the Board on how the journals can best capitalize on/mitigate these opportunities/risks.
- Ensure that IDSA’s journals advance the principles of inclusion, diversity, access and equity in the infectious diseases community and scholarly communications more broadly.
- Upon request, participate in IDSA/HIVMA advocacy activities, responding to IDSA/HIVMA action alerts, joining IDSA/HIVMA for meetings with policymakers and encouraging colleagues to support IDSA/HIVMA advocacy.
- Upon request, serve as a media spokesperson for IDSA in support of Society policies, positions and strategic priorities. If called upon to serve in this capacity, media training will be provided.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of the scholarly publishing environment.
- Prior experience as an editor for an IDSA journal, non-IDSA scholarly scientific journal or a large-scale scientific publication preferred.
- Embodies IDSA’s Inclusion, Diversity, Access and Equity Principles
- Displays the appropriate Ideal Characteristics for IDSA Leadership for the role
- Other than the journal editors-in-chief, who participate in the Journals Committee as part of their role with the journals, members of the Journals Committee cannot concurrently serve on the editorial board of an IDSA journal (i.e., as a deputy or associate editor), although they may be members of an IDSA journal editorial advisory board.

Estimated Time Commitment
- Number of face-to-face meetings: up to one meeting/year
- Length of face-to-face meetings: typically a full-day meeting spread over two days (the afternoon of day 1 and the morning of day 2) to facilitate member travel
- Number of remote meetings: Up to 3 per year, up to 2 hours each
- Hours/year of committee work required outside of meetings: 5 hours
- Additional time may be required if member agrees to lead a project (e.g. drafting a white paper) or to represent IDSA at an external meeting
Method of Appointment
With input from the CEO, committee chair, and committee staff liaison, the members shall be appointed by the president and president-elect.
Terms of Office
- Chair and Vice Chair: two years with the option of one additional, consecutive, one-year term
- Members: three-year terms with no option for consecutive reappointment.
