Description:

The purpose of the Fellows' In-Training Exam Work Group is to oversee the annual development for the IDSA Fellows’ In-Training Exam (FITE) and to develop items for the FITE and to review the item pool and ensure content is up to date.  

Responsibilities

  • Provide subject matter expertise and item-writing skills to write items for the FITE. Work includes reviewing draft items of workgroup members to build the annual FITE, and reviewing existing items in the pool to edit the FITE biennially
  • Recommend repurposing of exam content for educational purposes to Professional Development Committee, as appropriate 
  • Upon request, participate in IDSA/HIVMA advocacy activities, responding to IDSA/HIVMA action alerts, joining IDSA/HIVMA for meetings with policymakers and encouraging colleagues to support IDSA/HIVMA advocacy
  • Upon request, serve as a media spokesperson for IDSA in support of Society policies, positions and strategic priorities. If called upon to serve in this capacity, media training will be provided

Qualifications

A well-rounded committee of individuals with subject matter expertise across a variety of practice settings and geographic locations will be sought, with expertise in the following areas:
  • Experience in test item writing (or participation in an Item-writing workshop prior to appointment if not)
  • Expertise in specific topic areas related to the exam content
In 2024, the work group is specifically seeking to add the following expertise:
  • One PharmD
  • Two MDs with expertise in ID Critical Care, Clinical Microbiology, or Antimicrobial Stewardship/Epidemiology

Estimated Time Commitment

  • Number of face-to-face meetings: annual two-day item-review meeting to be held at the National Board of Medical Examiners office in Philadelphia, PA or virtually. Biennial pool review meeting to be held during IDWeek either in-person or virtually. 
  • Hours/year of work required outside of meetings: 36 (members), 45 (chair and vice-chair). Committee members are often asked to respond to email communications on a regular or as needed basis to provide input or review content. 

Method of Appointment

With input from the work group chair and staff liaison, the members shall be appointed by the Training Program Directors' Leadership Group.

Term of Office

  • Chairs and vice-chairs will serve for two years. Reappointment for one additional, consecutive, one-year term is permissible.
  • Members shall serve four-year terms with the option for one, consecutive, four-year reappointment.

Up to 15 members:

  • Chair
  • Vice Chair
  • Up to 13 at-large members

Accountability

Reports to the Training Program Directors Community of Practice Leadership Group.
