Purpose

To increase member engagement in IDSA & HIVMA advocacy initiatives through the development of an advanced advocacy leadership corps. Advocacy Liaisons will put a familiar face on IDSA & HIVMA advocacy efforts while increasing engagement in advocacy at the federal level and supporting deeper engagement in member advocacy on IDSA & HIVMA policy priorities.

 

Responsibilities

  • Personalize IDSA & HIVMA calls to action for institutional, regional, and state colleagues to increase member uptake on advocacy campaigns. This may include:
    • Forwarding online action alerts to state/institution colleagues with personal messages about the importance of the issue to the state or institution
    • Providing brief updates on IDSA & HIVMA policy priorities at ID division meetings in the institution, state/regional society meetings, or other state/local ID venues.
  • Participate and encourage colleagues to participate in advocacy initiatives and activities , including online action alerts, in-district meetings, site visits and hill days in DC.
  • Assist with promoting the IDSA & HIVMA advocacy program and priorities during IDWeek and participate in activities, including the advocacy session and advocacy booth.
  • Solicit patient and member stories from colleagues and encourage story sharing with Congress and the media.
  • Participate in Advocacy Liaisons meetings and email discussions.

Ideal Qualifications

  • An interest in federal advocacy for ID & HIV patients, caregivers, and providers.
  • Support for the IDSA & HIVMA policy agendas.
  • Experience advocating for ID & HIV policies on the local, state and/or federal level, though previous advocacy experience is not required.

 

Number of Members

Up to 15 members

 

Composition

  • The Advocacy Liaisons will be comprised of 15 IDSA & HIVMA members.
  • Appointments will consider the need for a balance of advocacy experience, career stages, professional areas of ID/HIV, geographic regions of the U.S., and other aspects of inclusion, diversity, accessibility & equity (IDA&E). A home address is necessary to determine members’ Congressional representation.
  • The size of this group will increase incrementally by term or as deemed necessary by PPGR & HIVMA staff.

 

Meeting Frequency

  • One in-person annual meeting to be held at IDWeek in October.
  • Teleconferences to be held roughly quarterly, as needed, for a total of 3-5 meetings per year.
  • Liaisons will be asked to respond to email communications on a regular basis.

Estimated Time Commitment

An average of 2 hours per month; the federal Congressional session varies over the course of the year and may require more hours in one month and fewer hours in another month.

 

Method of Appointment

Liaisons will be selected from the applicant pool and approved by PPGR & HIVMA staff.

 

Term of Office

  • Liaisons will serve for two years, in conjunction with Congressional turnover.
  • Reappointment for one additional, consecutive, two-year term is permissible.
  • Following the completion of the term(s) of service, Liaisons will have the opportunity to stay engaged as part of an Emeritus Class.
